Bahnhofstrasse is Zermatt's main pedestrian artery, running from the train station through the middle of this car-free village. Lined with shops, restaurants and bars, it puts you within walking distance of the lift stations and makes the most convenient, liveliest base for a first visit.
The street begins at the train station and runs south toward the church square and the Matter Vispa river, with side lanes branching off to older parts of the village. Everything here is walkable, and the strip is busy by day with shoppers and skiers and remains lively into the evening with après-ski and dining.
Getting around
You arrive directly by the Täsch shuttle train at the station, and the Gornergrat railway plus the main lift stations toward the Matterhorn side are all reachable on foot or by electric taxi. Reaching Zurich (ZRH) means a train to Täsch, then onward Swiss rail connections of roughly three to four hours.

Before you book this area
- Vibe
- The most animated part of the village, with a steady buzz of shoppers and skiers day and night.
- Nightlife
- The greatest concentration of bars and après-ski venues in Zermatt sits along or just off this street.
- Watch out for
- It can feel crowded and noisy in peak season, so light sleepers may prefer a lane set back from the main strip.
