Oia sits on the northern tip of Santorini, about 11 km from Fira. Known for its whitewashed houses, blue-domed churches and the island's most famous sunset, it's the most scenic and sought-after base — ideal for couples and photographers, though its narrow lanes get extremely crowded in the evenings.
The village is built along the caldera ridge, with a main pedestrian street running its length and stepped paths dropping toward Ammoudi Bay below. Days are relatively calm and gorgeous for wandering, but the streets fill dramatically in the hours before sunset as crowds gather at the castle ruins and viewpoints.
Getting around
Buses connect Oia to Fira, from where you transfer for other destinations; the airport (JTR) is roughly a 25–35 minute drive. The village itself is walkable but very stepped, and Ammoudi Bay is reached via a steep flight of steps.
