Fira is Santorini's capital, sitting right on the caldera rim roughly in the middle of the island's west coast. It has the densest concentration of restaurants, bars, shops and services on the island, and doubles as the main transport hub — making it the most convenient and easiest base for first-time visitors.
The town clusters around a central square and pedestrian lanes that run along the caldera edge, lined with cafes, shops and viewpoints looking out to the volcano. By day it's busy with cruise crowds and shoppers; in the evening it has the island's liveliest bar and nightlife scene, plus a cable car and the old donkey path connecting the town to the Old Port below.
Getting around
Fira is the hub of the island's bus network, with services to Oia, Kamari, Perissa and the beaches, and it's about a 15–20 minute drive from Santorini Airport (JTR). Much of the town is walkable, though the caldera-side lanes are stepped and steep.

Frequently asked
Is Fira a good base without a car?
Yes — it's the centre of the bus network, so you can reach most beaches and villages by public transport, making it the easiest area to stay car-free.
Can you see the sunset from Fira?
You get caldera and volcano views, but Fira faces more southwest than Oia; many people still take a bus or walk to Oia for the classic sunset.
