In short

Altstadt is Zurich's medieval heart, straddling both banks of the Limmat river between the main station and the point where the river meets Lake Zurich. Its cobbled lanes, historic churches and dense mix of shops, cafés and restaurants make it the most atmospheric base for first-time visitors who want to walk to nearly everything. It suits those who prioritise character and central location over quiet nights.

The east bank (Niederdorf) is the pedestrianised, lively side, while the west bank around Lindenhof and Bahnhofstrasse feels more polished. Landmarks like the Grossmünster, Fraumünster and St. Peter's church are all within a few minutes' walk, and the lakefront at Bürkliplatz is a short stroll south. Days are busy with sightseers and shoppers; evenings in Niederdorf get loud with bar-goers and street noise.

Getting around

You can walk to the main station, Bahnhofstrasse and the lakefront within 5–15 minutes, and trams and trains fan out from Zurich Hauptbahnhof nearby. Zurich Airport (ZRH) is roughly 10–15 minutes by direct train from the main station.

Yes — the lakefront at Bürkliplatz is only a short walk south along the river, making waterfront strolls easy from anywhere in the Old Town.
