Old Town, known locally as Poluotok, is Zadar's compact historic peninsula and the heart of the city's sightseeing. It packs the Sea Organ, the Greeting to the Sun, the Roman forum and cafe-lined squares into a walkable grid, making it the liveliest and most atmospheric place for a first-time visitor to base themselves.
The peninsula is small enough to cross on foot in about 15 minutes, running from the ferry port at its base to the sea-facing tip where the Sea Organ and Greeting to the Sun sit side by side. Days are spent wandering marble streets, the Roman forum and St Donatus, while evenings bring sunset crowds on the waterfront steps and buzzy bars and restaurants around the main squares.
Getting around
Everything in the Old Town is reachable on foot, including the Sea Organ at the peninsula's tip; Zadar Airport (ZAD) is roughly 10–15 km away and connected by shuttle bus and taxi. City buses and the small passenger boat across the harbour link you to the rest of Zadar.

Before you book this area
- Vibe
- Atmospheric and historic by day, lively and social after dark.
- Watch out for
- Narrow lanes and evening crowds mean noise and limited car access — parking is scarce and often outside the peninsula.
- Nightlife
- Bars and cafes cluster around the squares, so it's the most animated base in the city.
Frequently asked
Is the Old Town noisy at night?
The central squares and waterfront can be lively into the evening, especially in summer; choose a room on a quieter side lane if you're a light sleeper.
Can I drive and park in the Old Town?
Vehicle access is very restricted on the pedestrianised peninsula, so most visitors park in lots near the base and walk in.
