← Where to stay in Heraklion (Crete)

In short

The Old Town is Heraklion's compact historic core, wrapped by the surviving Venetian walls and centred on pedestrian-friendly streets like 25th August Street. It suits first-time visitors and sightseers who want most of the city's museums, cafes and tavernas within walking distance and reliable bus links out to Knossos.

You're within a short walk of the Heraklion Archaeological Museum, the Morosini (Lions) Fountain and the descent down 25th August Street to the Venetian harbour. The lanes are dense and lively by day with shops and cafes, and stay animated into the evening around the main squares, though quieter side streets exist a block or two off the busiest routes.

Getting around

Almost everything in the centre is walkable, and city buses to the Palace of Knossos leave from stops near the centre; Heraklion (HER) airport is only a few kilometres east, reachable by a quick taxi or bus.

No. The centre is best explored on foot, and driving and parking in the historic core are difficult, so a car is more of a hindrance unless you plan day trips.
