The Old Town (Altstadt) is Bern's historic heart, a UNESCO World Heritage core that curls inside a bend of the Aare river around the Zytglogge clock tower. Defined by kilometres of covered sandstone arcades, fountains and cobbled lanes, it puts nearly every major sight within walking distance and suits first-time visitors and sightseers above all.
The main axis runs from the railway station east along Marktgasse and Kramgasse to the Zytglogge and on toward the Bear Park and Nydegg quarter by the river. Everything here is walkable, the arcades keep you dry in rain, and the district shifts from bustling shopping and café life by day to a quieter, atmospheric evening once the shops close.
Getting around
You are already at the Zytglogge and most landmarks on foot; the main station sits at the Old Town's western edge, with direct trains to Zurich Airport (ZRH) in roughly two hours. Trams and buses run through the centre if you want to save your legs.

Before you book this area
- Vibe
- Historic, walkable and postcard-pretty, busiest in the middle of the day.
- Nightlife
- Relaxed rather than lively — restaurants, wine bars and cellar venues rather than clubs.
- Watch out for
- Cobblestones and some pedestrian-only lanes make wheeled luggage and driving awkward.
Frequently asked
Is the Old Town too touristy to actually stay in?
It is the most visited part of Bern by day, but crowds thin markedly in the evening, and staying inside the arcades means you skip the commute to the sights entirely.
Can I bring a car?
It's best avoided — much of the Old Town is pedestrianised or restricted, parking is limited and costly, and the trains make a car unnecessary.
