The Bahnhof area clusters around Bern's main railway station on the western edge of the Old Town. It's the city's transport hub and its most practical base — busy and functional rather than scenic — ideal for convenience-focused travellers and short stays.
The station opens straight onto Bahnhofplatz, with Spitalgasse and the Old Town arcades beginning immediately to the east. It's a busy zone of shops, services and commuter flow by day; the immediate surroundings are more workaday than charming, but the Zytglogge is only a short stroll away.
Getting around
This is the best-connected point in Bern: direct trains to Zurich Airport (ZRH) take about two hours, and nearly every tram and bus line converges here. The Zytglogge is roughly a ten-minute walk east along the arcades.
