The Cidade Velha is Faro's walled historic heart, sitting just south of the downtown streets and beside the Ria Formosa lagoon. Entered through the landmark Arco da Vila, it is a compact quarter of cobbled lanes, the cathedral square and small museums, best suited to first-time visitors and anyone who prefers character over convenience.
You enter through the Arco da Vila into the Largo da Sé, dominated by the cathedral, with the archaeological museum and the old bishop's palace nearby. The whole quarter is walkable in minutes and feels calm and photogenic by day; in the evening it grows quiet, as most bars and restaurants sit just outside the walls in the Baixa.
Getting around
Everything is on foot — the Baixa, marina and boat departures are a few minutes' walk away. Faro (FAO) airport is roughly a short taxi, bus or drive from here, and the train and bus stations are a walkable distance near the waterfront.
