In short

Casco Viejo is Bilbao's medieval old town, sitting on the east bank of the Nervión river at the historic heart of the city. It's a warren of narrow pedestrian streets packed with pintxos bars, cafés and shops, and it stays lively well into the evening. This is the natural pick for first-time visitors and anyone who wants nightlife and atmosphere on the doorstep.

The district centres on the Siete Calles (Seven Streets) and the arcaded Plaza Nueva, with the covered Ribera market on the riverside and the Santiago Cathedral tucked among the lanes. Everything is walkable and pedestrianised, so days are for browsing and coffee while evenings fill with people hopping between bars for pintxos and txikiteo.

Getting around

The Casco Viejo metro station and nearby tram stop connect you across the city, and the Guggenheim Museum is a walk of roughly 20–25 minutes along the river or a couple of metro stops away. From Bilbao (BIO) the airport bus (Bizkaibus A3247) runs to the centre, and taxis take around 15–20 minutes.
