Grossbasel is Basel's historic heart on the south bank of the Rhine, wrapping around Marktplatz, the red sandstone Rathaus and the twin-towered Münster cathedral. The area centres on Marktplatz and the main shopping axis of Freie Strasse and Gerbergasse, with the Münster and its terrace overlooking the Rhine to the east. Streets are compact and largely pedestrian-friendly, lively with shoppers and market stalls by day; evenings are calmer and refined, with restaurants rather than a loud bar scene. The Mittlere Brücke links you straight over to Kleinbasel.
Getting around
Everything of interest is on foot, and trams converge on Barfüsserplatz and Marktplatz for the rest of the city. For EuroAirport (BSL), take a tram or short walk to Basel SBB and the airport bus (line 50), roughly 20–30 minutes to the airport.
