In short

The Historic Centre is the compact core of Amalfi, gathered around the dramatic steps of Amalfi Cathedral and the bustling Piazza Duomo. Restaurants, shops, cafes and the seafront all sit within a few minutes on foot, making it the most convenient base for first-timers and short stays. It suits travellers who want everything close and don't mind a lively, sometimes crowded atmosphere.

Everything radiates from Piazza Duomo and the main street, Via Lorenzo d'Amalfi, which threads inland past shops and cafes toward quieter lanes and the old paper-mill valley. By day the piazza and cathedral steps are busy with visitors and day-trippers; in the evening the crowds thin and the town takes on a calmer, more local rhythm. It is fully walkable, though narrow alleys and steps are part of the experience.

Getting around

You are already at Amalfi Cathedral and moments from the seafront and ferry dock; SITA buses and boats depart from the waterfront a short walk away. From Naples Capodichino (NAP) the usual routes are a transfer or train to Salerno or Sorrento followed by a coastal bus or seasonal ferry into Amalfi.

Frequently asked

Is the Historic Centre too noisy to sleep?

It can be lively in the evenings around the piazza, but crowds ease considerably once day-trippers leave; rooms set back from the main street tend to be quieter.

Do I need a car if I stay here?

No — the centre is walkable and buses and ferries leave nearby, and driving and parking in central Amalfi are genuinely difficult.
